The Carbon Cycle

Overview

The carbon cycle shows the movement of carbon through the earths spheres, there are reservoirs such as the oceans, which is the largest storage, storing dissolved CO2 as well as the marine life. The atmosphere which stores Carbon dioxide(CO2) and methane (CH4),(25) this is a big one because it influences weather patterns and climate. The geo sphere which is the largest long term storage, it includes coal. Oil and gas and rocks. Finally the bio sphere where people are involved. People breathe out CO2 which goes into the atmosphere, plans and animals are also involved by them releasing CO2.(26)

Description and explanation of the importance of the carbon cycle

The carbon cycle is a necessary natural cycle that gives life-sustaining materials on Earth. It is the nonstop cycling of carbon between the atmosphere, oceans, soil and living things. This mechanism is a natural regulator of the earth’s climate, controlling the amount of carbon dioxide, one of the greenhouse gases, present in the atmosphere. Plants suck in carbon dioxide and convert it into organic matter through photosynthesis — anchoring the entire food chain. (28) The animals feed on these plants, and through respiration they release carbon again into the atmosphere. Moreover, carbon is stored in various different sources including fossil fuels and limestone, which may later be reintroduced in the atmosphere by natural processes or anthropogenic activities, such as burning fossil fuels. This is one way in which the carbon cycle enables ecological balance with our atmospheric cycle by supporting plant growth, regulating temperature, and keeping the ecosystems healthy. (29) Any breakdowns of this cycle, such as excessive phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizer application and increased carbon emissions, can result in climate change or other environmental problems. Hence, the carbon cycle is critical to comprehend and safeguard if we are to preserve for our planet and its occupants. We can preserve this essential cycle for generations to come, by acting to reduce carbon emissions and promote carbon storage. The so-called “Carbon Market”(33) is a developed by those responsible for greenhouse emissions in which developers price how effective their product is in reducing the greenhouse emissions. This service is functional but does not address the impacts of deforestation which plays a significant role in climate change.

As CO2 absorb by plants through photosynthesis, the carbon that it contains is reconstructed into organic matter. Carbon emitted during the decomposition of dead plants is left in soil stored in agricultural fertility and improving soil nutrients.(34) This cycle helps mitigate climate change by reducing the level of CO2 in the air.
